OFFICIAL EXPEDITION #4 - KALEVAN KANSA: QUEST FOR HARMONY
The year is 1900. A group of Finnish settlers looking to escape the hardship of working in the Dunsmuir mines reach out to a penniless writer, editor and native Finn living in Australia. His name is Matti Kurikka, and the miners ask for his assistance by inviting him to their current town of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada in the hopes of starting a new life on new land.
One year later, the Finnish workers and Matti Kurikka, after responding favorably to the invitation from the miners, set out north, in rowboats on the waters of the Queen Charlotte Strait.
Their destination? Malcolm Island, a small piece of land just off the north eastern tip of Vancouver Island.
Their goal? To create a new society. A utopian society with a socialist agenda called Kalevan Kansa. The chosen location for Kalevan Kansa is the southern coast of Malcolm Island, and it’s given a name by the group upon arrival. They call it, Sointula, or “place of harmony” in the Finnish language.Today, Sointula still exists with a population of about 800, some of which are descendents of original members of Kalevan Kansa. So it is with great excitement that the Society for the Preservation of Historic Revelry announce their fourth Official Expedition - QUEST FOR HARMONY.
